Times of Silence

by Frances Hughes

SILENCE - a noun meaning absence of sound or noise; stillness; secrecy.

SILENT - an adjective meaning quiet; still; noiseless.

Two words with just the changing of the last letters (ce) and (t) have the same spelling. With the last letters added they become two different words altogether. The English language is so puzzling to foreigners who seek to learn it and I have to say maybe some of us who use it.

SILENCE
This morning as I sat at breakfast, still thinking of spiritual Thoughts I had running in my mind, I chose to not turn on the TV as usual. I began to think about the intrusion it is at times. I am always curious when my mind begins to journey down unknown pathways as to where it will go. Today was no different than any other time.

I began to think what it must be like to be deaf and never hear the singing of a bird or the laughter of a child. Two of the most beautiful sounds one can experience. I suppose if you were born that way you would never know. This can work the same way for all our senses I suppose. Do you not see how blessed are we who can experience all these things?

Think about this! People who are handicapped with loss of sight, hearing, smell, touch, and taste (the senses) have never experienced what these are like. I suppose, (since I have never questioned anyone ike this) that there is some other type of compensation for this. I do know that a person who is blind develops a keen sense of hearing and touch. About the others I have no knowledge.

This is when I do my best writing and thinking on things spiritual or problem solving (if I have one). One of my favorite pastimes in earlier years was to sit down with a book and read it until I fnished it. Nowadays this does not seem to be possible anymore, even though I have more time than most people do.

I think the computer has changed that part in my life. Using a computer takes a toll on your eyes, so that after awhile they need to be rested and relaxed - that puts reading out of the question.

Watching TV also makes your eyes hurt after awhile, particularly if you do it constantly. In spite of all this about the eyes I still think I manage to do a lot more than the average person can with their eyes. For this I am thankful to God.

In the past I have been a ferocious knitter and crocheter, always doing something whenever I sat down. I can not just sit and relax. I have to have something going on at the same time with my hands. I have a stack of afghans available anytime I feel like giving someone something. I also make slippers knitted like socks and most comfortabl
