DISCIPLINING CHILDREN IN GOD WAYS

written by: Norman Palma

Last year, during one of my "recruiting day schedule", I spoke with a middle aged man about Couples For Christ Ministry and other related matter on how to go about it. I told him about his role and God's role throughout the 13 talks of the Christian Life Program. He said, "yes", "I sure need a lot of spiritual help in regards mostly with my children."

"It seems like all I do is yell at my kids", he laments. He continued to ask me, "are my kids getting worse or I'm just getting more impatient?" He said that, "worse of all, these disturbing and very unfriendly relationship with my children always leads to confrontation with my wife." Incidentally, for some personal reasons, this couple did not attend the program. I've been seeing him around, and I know he still have the same problem. He promised he will attend our on- going CLP, but he missed it again. I know and God knows he need help. I hope with deep prayers, he'll make it next time.

How is it with you Brothers and sisters? Has the Biblical call to discipline your children always turned into an endless round of shouting matches? If so, what can you do to change the situation?

The Scripture in the Bible constantly invites us to slow down and think about our own relationship to authority and correction. After all, our children will learn more from what they see in us than from what we try to tell them. Our children are the most precious gift that God gave us above all.

If we could allow ourselves to feel it, are there not times when you would long to cry on God's shoulder, and let God tell you that, "although you are wrong, you are also worthwhile because you are also one of My precious children?" And is there not something in you that would be delighted if you could bring a smile on God's face by treating your children through HIS ways and means?

Treat and rear all your children like when they are babies (with extra care) and God will take of you the same way too.
