LEN AND JOE

LEN AND JOE

Len is just an old man, and his eyes are quite dim,
and nobody thinks very much about him.
He lives by himself--with his dog, nick-named "Joe"--
since his wife died of cancer, about twelve years ago,
Two years before that, Beth had gone for a stroll.
She'd wandered on down by the old water-hole.

Her ears were alerted to a cry of distress.
She went to investigate. . . Oh, what a mess!
"Who could have committed this terrible crime?"
she said, as she rescued a dog from the slime.
She wrapped up the puppy, and hurried on home.
She bathed him and nursed him, and named him, "Jerome."

From that day, and onward, "Joe" was part of their life--
now Len's only companion, since he lost his wife.
Each day, for twelve years, around about two,
Joe and Len walk to town, just for something to do.
Walking, now, is not easy for Len or for Joe.
They're both old and crippled, and their going is slow.

But Joe always knows when it's time for their walk.
He snatches his leash from beside the big clock.
And together, you'll see them again and again.
Joe walks a few steps...stops...and then waits for Len.
So patiently, patiently,    Joe takes the lead.
To everyone's stares, Joe and Len pay no heed.

They stop at a restaurant--you know they'll be there.
They have milk and biscuits, which both of them share.
It seems no one cares that Len brings Jerome.
It's a fact that's accepted: this is their second home.
Then, 'though no words are spoken, they stand up to go.
They make their way homeward, Len led by Joe.
