What is a Christian?

There is a very twisted and very wrong view these days of what being a Christian
really is. When you ask, some people would say a Christian is “someone who goes to
church”, or “someone who believes in God”, or even “someone who has been baptized or
joined a church”. But to understand what a Christian really is, I believe we must first
determine what Christianity is. The dictionary defines it as a “religion based on the
teachings of Jesus”. That is true to a certain degree but I don’t completely agree with it.
First of all, I don’t look at Christianity as a religion. I look at it as a relationship, a
personal relationship with Jesus Christ. So in looking at it in this light, I say that a
Christian isn’t just someone who goes to church; or has been baptized; or believes in God,
for even the devils believe in God(James 2:19); but a Christian is someone who has a
personal relationship with Jesus Christ. A Christian trusts in God and strives to live his life
according to God’s commands. A simple and short definition of a Christian, yet it seems to
sum up a lot of the other things and can clear up a lot of misunderstanding which, with no
doubt in my mind, has led many to the everlasting torment called hell where the worm
never dies and the fires are never quenched, and a place so awful, that it can only be
described as a place where men gnash their teeth.
Anyone who is reading this, and you have just discovered that a Christian is not
just a person that goes to church, or believes in God, or anything like that, I ask you to
think about your life. Do you consider yourself a Christian? If you do, do you have a
personal relationship with Jesus? If not, I urge you to surrender your life to Jesus. Go to
him in prayer, and truly ask forgiveness of your sins. Ask him to come into your heart and
